Ashburn Library's 10th anniversary happening on August 10th. We will
need some extra help that day directing our library patrons to the right
areas for activities. <b>I will be posting the slots on Sign Up Genius at 4pm today.<br />

I know there has been some confusion about signing up for extra slots, and I'd like to help explain. <br />

Before I start, I'd like to say that none of this is because of anything bad that you all have done. You're <i>awesome</i> volunteers, and I think it's great that you want to be here at the library all the time. But we need to give you breaks! <br />
<br /></div>
I had a nice long talk with Ms North, and we have come up with these <b>two guidelines for signing up for extra slots</b>: <br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>1. All volunteers are limited to volunteering for two things per day.</b></span>
You can volunteer for two shifts at the desk, or one program and one
volunteer shift at the desk, but no more than two volunteer "things" per
day. We'd really like everyone to have a good chance at signing up, and
we don't want you to be living at the library. It's not as glamorous as
it sounds.<br />
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>2. No volunteer can do two consecutive shifts.</b></span> That means
if you're signed up for 3-5 one day, you can't also sign up for 5-7. We
appreciate your enthusiasm, but we don't want you to be sitting there
for four hours without a break. That's how insanity starts, guys. <br />

This is our first year using Sign Up Genius, so we're still
working out how to best use it. That said, in the past when people
emailed back and forth, it could get complicated really quickly. We're
hoping Sign Up Genius can help to remove a lot of the "who emailed us
first" confusion, and help you all sign up for shifts more quickly. <br />

Just a few reminders:<br />

<span style="color: cyan;"><b>Cell Phone</b>:</span> Do not text, play games, or use your cell phone or tablets during your shift. Period. Put these devices away during your shift so that you can appear approachable to patrons signing up for Summer Reading.<br />

<b><span style="color: cyan;">Be Early</span></b>: Always come a few minutes early for your shift so we can tell you any new information and so that the volunteers before you can leave their shift on time.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: cyan;">Boredom</span></b>: It will be slow sometimes during your shift in the coming weeks. Be prepared for librarians to give you other tasks to do such as help them with programs, make die-cut shapes, shelve books, etc. We also have a Volunteer Notebook that you can doodle in. Also, you can always bring a book with you to read! (Hardback or paperback only, no e-readers)<br />

<span style="color: cyan;"><b>Tablets</b>: </span> Please leave your tablets and e-readers at home during your shift. You can always bring a hardback or paperback book to read if your shift is slow.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: cyan;"><b>Friends Stopping By</b>:</span> While you are wearing your volunteer T-shirt you are at a job representing the Loudoun County Government. If your friends stop by and want to chat or hang out, tell them you will catch up with them later when your shift is over.<br />

We certainly are ready here at the Ashburn Library. Summer Reading Program (SRP) begins on <strong><span style="color: yellow;">Monday, June 10.</span></strong> It will be a very busy week for volunteers as children, teens, and parents come to the library to register for SRP. Here are just a few reminders:<br />

If your regular shift is on Sunday, then your first volunteer day will be Sunday, June 16 and will be listed on the Week 2 schedule (which has not been posted yet) All of our extra shifts for Week 1 are full! <li>Wear your <span style="color: yellow;"><b>volunteer t-shirt</b>. </span><span style="color: black;">when you come in for your shift so we can recognize you are a volunteer. </span></li>
<li>Please check in at the Youth Services Desk with a librarian as you come in for your shift.</li>
<li>Bring a smile and a friendly attitude. Remember, we will be right there to help you answer questions or solve problems.</li>
<li>If your shift is on <span style="color: cyan;"><strong>Monday Morning</strong></span> starting at 10:00 am please come by <strong>9:30 am</strong> so we can train you at the SRP Table before the big crowds come in at 10!</li>
<li><span style="color: cyan;"><b>Monday evening volunteers</b>:</span> please come a little early if possible at 6:20 pm and expect a crowd. Our program is <i><b>Wildlife Ambassadors</b></i> and it's very popular!</li>

We won't be taking any more applications. The next step is for every volunteer to attend one of the orientations. It is <strong>MANDATORY</strong> that you attend. If you don't, you will not be able to volunteer with the Summer Reading Program this year.<br />

<span style="color: black;"><strong><u>Orientations</u></strong>:</span> There will be two orientations: <span style="color: red;"><strong>Thursday, May 30, 7-8:30 pm or Saturday, June 1, 2-3:30 pm</strong>.</span> You don't need to register for an orientation, just come to the one that fits your schedule. <br />

<span style="color: black;"><u><strong>Schedules</strong></u>:</span> The first week's schedule should be ready soon. Just click on the link on the right-hand column where is says "Week 1." Welcome to your new 2013 Ashburn Library Summer Reading Program (SRP) Teen Volunteer blog! We are happy that you want to volunteer at the library this summer and help us make the 2013 SRP the best ever! We couldn’t do it without your help. This blog is where you can learn more about being a volunteer, check your weekly schedule, and find out about additional volunteer opportunities. It will also be the place to post questions or simply share volunteer experiences!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><u>Orientations</u></strong>: Every SRP volunteer <u>must</u> attend an orientation. There are two orientations to choose from: <strong><span style="color: #cc0000;">Thursday, May 30, 7-8:30 pm <u>or</u> Saturday, June 1, 2-3:30 pm</span></strong>. If you are unable to attend either orientation, you will not be able to be a SRP volunteer. There are other </span><span style="color: black; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><a href="http://engagedpatrons.org/Events.cfm?SiteID=6457" target="_blank">volunteer opportunities</a></span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> at the library, however.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><u>2013 Theme</u></strong>: The 2013 theme for the SRP is: "In Your Backyard". Our Summer Reading Program starts on Monday, June 10th and ends on Monday, August 5th. <strong><span style="color: yellow;">Volunteer shifts start on Monday, June 10th.</span></strong></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><strong><u>Weekly Schedules</u></strong>: We ask each volunteer to commit to working at least one 2-hr or 2½ hr shift each week. Summer Reading Sign-up/Desk Shifts are: 10 am-12:30 pm, 12:30-3:30 pm, 3-5 pm, 5-7 pm, 7-9 pm. Afternoon/Evening Programming shifts are Monday 6:00 - 8:00 pm or Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 - 4:30 pm. You can tell us your shift preferences when you fill out the SRP volunteer registration form <span style="color: black;">in person at the Ashburn Library Youth Services Desk.</span></span><br />
