Week 1 is Done! (And some reminders)

Congratulations everyone! We have finished a fantastic first week of our Summer Reading Program! Thank you for coming to your shifts on time, being positive, and for bringing your enthusiasm to the Ashburn Library. We couldn't have a successful Summer Reading Program without you

Just a few reminders:

Scheduling:  Keep letting me know whenever you have vacation or you can't make your shift as soon as you know! The sooner you tell us, the sooner we can schedule a sub.

Cell Phone:  Do not text, play games, or use your cell phone or tablets during your shift. Period. Put these devices away during your shift so that you can appear approachable to patrons signing up for Summer Reading.

Be Early:  Always come a few minutes early for your shift so we can tell you any new information and so that the volunteers before you can leave their shift on time.

Boredom:  It will be slow sometimes during your shift in the coming weeks. Be prepared for librarians to give you other tasks to do such as help them with programs, make die-cut shapes, shelve books, etc. We also have a Volunteer Notebook that you can doodle in. Also, you can always bring a book with you to read! (Hardback or paperback only, no e-readers)

Tablets:  Please leave your tablets and e-readers at home during your shift. You can always bring a hardback or paperback book to read if your shift is slow.

Friends Stopping By:  While you are wearing your volunteer T-shirt you are at a job representing the Loudoun County Government. If your friends stop by and want to chat or hang out, tell them you will catch up with them later when your shift is over.

And finally, remember to smile!

Also, there is an extra sub shift available on Sign-Up genius tomorrow (Monday June 17th from 3-5 pm)

Orientation!

Volunteer applications: We have taken 109 volunteer applications which means we have filled every volunteer slot!  We won't be taking any more applications.  The next step is for every volunteer to attend one of the orientations.  It is MANDATORY that you attend.  If you don't, you will not be able to volunteer with the Summer Reading Program this year.

Orientations:  There will be two orientations:  Thursday, May 30, 7-8:30 pm or Saturday, June 1, 2-3:30 pm.  You don't need to register for an orientation, just come to the one that fits your schedule.

Schedules:  The first week's schedule should be ready soon.  Just click on the link on the right-hand column where is says "Week 1."  If your know your summer vacation plans and have not indicated so on your application, please let me know as soon as possible so I can adjust the schedules and find subs.

The fun begins on Monday, June 10 at 10:00 am.  We couldn't do it without the help of you, our amazing Teen volunteers.  Thank you for helping us this summer!

Welcome 2013 Volunteers!

Welcome: Hi!  Welcome to your new 2013 Ashburn Library Summer Reading Program (SRP) Teen Volunteer blog!   We are happy that you want to volunteer at the library this summer and help us make the 2013 SRP the best ever!  We couldn’t do it without your help. This blog is where you can learn more about being a volunteer, check your weekly schedule, and find out about additional volunteer opportunities.  It will also be the place to post questions or simply share volunteer experiences!

Orientations:  Every SRP volunteer must attend an orientation.  There are two orientations to choose from: Thursday, May 30, 7-8:30 pm or Saturday, June 1, 2-3:30 pm.  If you are unable to attend either orientation, you will not be able to be a SRP volunteer.  There are other volunteer opportunities at the library, however.

2013 Theme: The 2013 theme for the SRP is: "In Your Backyard".  Our Summer Reading Program starts on Monday, June 10th and ends on Monday, August 5th. Volunteer shifts start on Monday, June 10th.

Weekly Schedules: We ask each volunteer to commit to working at least one 2-hr or 2½ hr shift each week.  Summer Reading Sign-up/Desk Shifts are: 10 am-12:30 pm, 12:30-3:30 pm, 3-5 pm, 5-7 pm, 7-9 pm. Afternoon/Evening Programming shifts are Monday 6:00 - 8:00 pm or Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 - 4:30 pm. You can tell us your shift preferences when you fill out the SRP volunteer registration form in person at the Ashburn Library Youth Services Desk.

OK, that's all for now.  We will post more soon!
